5 Comics to Watch for in June 2016 Island #8, edited by Brandon Graham and Emma Ríos; stories by Michael DeForge, Simon Roy, Ben Sears, and Xulia Vicente (June 8) Island magazine is finally monthly again, and in addition to the final part of Simon Roys space cannibal story Habitat, well have the first Image Comics work by indie darling Michael DeForge (Ant Colony), as well as art by  Night Airs Ben Sears and up-and-coming Spanish artist Xulia Vicente. If you havent been reading the best thing happening in comics for the past year,  you should jump in! Lumberjanes /  Gotham Academy #1 by  Chynna Clugston-Flores and  Rosemary Valero-OConnell (June 8) Its pretty much a match made in heaven. Maybe my two absolute favorite all-ages comics of the last couple years, smashed together! Im not one for corporate synergy, but Boom! picked the perfect time to do their first-ever cross-publisher crossover. Written by  Chynna Clugston-Flores of 00s cult hit  Blue Monday fame and drawn by Boom! regular  Rosemary Valero-OConnell, seeing the chemistry between the Gotham Academy kids and the Lumberjanes is sure to be  tons of (queer?!?) fun. Common sense would tell you a crossover like this is meant to use the bigger publishers franchise to promote the smaller publishers franchise, but with the runaway success of  Lumberjanes and DCs awful job promoting their hidden gem  Gotham Academy, this might actually be more of a boon to DC than it is to Boom! Merry Men #1 by Robert Rodi and Jackie Lewis (June 8) Okay, I just gotta put the official solicitation text here. I love it: 13th century England. Robert Godwinson, former lover of King Richard, lives with his band of Merry Men in Sherwood Forest, away from the watchful eye of Prince John, who has outlawed homosexuality. Though isolated, the men live in peacethat is, until a stranger approaches their camp asking for aid to a nearby town under siege by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robertnicknamed Robinis reluctant to help, but equally eager to get rid of this perplexing stranger and to put his formidable bow-and-arrow to use. Its Robin Hood like youve never seen him before, based on scholarly speculation about whats really behind the outlaws legend. I CANT WAIT for a historical fiction gay Robin Hood story. And the bear variant cover by Ed Luce of  Wuvable Oaf fame! Body readyyy Godzilla  Treasury Edition by James Stokoe (June 15) Licensed comics: theyre usually awful.  Godzilla: not a franchise I usually care about. That was until I encountered James Stokoes  Godzilla work. Stokoe is otherwise best known for his madcap creator-owned books  Wonton Soup  and  Orc Stain, but his graffiti-influenced color-gradient-infused style is a perfect match for the iconic kaiju. His comics  are up there with the absolute best live-action  Godzilla movies, and this treasury edition collects the first issue of his series  Godzilla: The Half-Century War, as well as his issue of  Godzilla in Hell and a buncha pin-ups and covers hes done. Fun fact: in a Comics Cola interview, Stokoe reveals the first comics he  ever drew as a kid were about the Nerds candy mascots!?! Looking back on his hyper-colorful style now, it makes perfect sense. I.D. by Emma Ríos (June 22) Originally serialized as a two-part story in  Island magazine and collected in a handsome lil paperback volume,  I.D. is the near-future story of three people from different walks of life getting brain transplants. Emma Ríos (Pretty Deadly,  Mirror) weaves a cerebral  yarn entirely in white and shades of red, her first major single-creator work,  and its as close to hard sci-fi as well likely ever see her dothe end of the book features an essay by Miguel Alberte Woodward, a neurologist Ríos consulted to make the science in the book as accurate as possible. Once you get past all the STEM  trappings,  I.D. is ultimately a human story about peoples desires to have an entirely new body, and the depth of personal motivations behind it. The story touches on trans identity in a surprisingly nuanced way, and features Ríos signature dreamlike layouts, with inset panels, close-ups of limbs, and un-romanticized depictions of sex and the naked human body. Life as an Outcast in Huckleberry Finn nbsp; One of the themes that has been addressed by writers since the beginning of civilization is the issue of the split between living in society and living by oneself. We see this in that peculiarly American genre of books known as road books, in which the protagonist embarks upon a long journey or period of time away from society in order to find themselves. One of the quintessential examples of this type of book is Mark Twains novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, technically a river book rather than a road book. In it, as in many road books before and since, spending a long period of time away from society allows the protagonist to see the difference between the rules of†¦show more content†¦Even more, it seems that Huck is only capable of thinking while on the river - he gets on the river just before this incident begins, and goes back to shore just after it ends. It almost seems as if he requires the physical surrounding of the river as a place to which to escape. nbsp; Hucks relationship with Jim also progressed on the river (which symbolizes that natural world and freedom from society) but stagnates on the shore (which represents mainstream society). Huck and Jim engage in all their bonding on the river, where they can forget the difference in their races - but when Huck goes out on shore, he is obligated to tie Jim up and leave him behind. Only on the river, free of the corrupting influence of society, are Huck and Jim free to express their true selves. nbsp; Also, we notice that most of Twains scathing social satire occurs during episodes on the shore. An example of this is the time that Huck spends with the Grangerfords, who feud with their rivals the Shepherdsons for reasons unknown to them. The young Buck, who could very well be seen as an alter ego to Huck since he is about the same age and has a similar name, seems to straddle the fence between mainstream society and Hucks outcast world. Like gravity, it is a phenomenon that we can experience but cannot understand. We are aware of the ageing of our bodies, of the effects of the movements of our planet, and of the ticking of the clock. We learn a little about what we call the past and we know that change is built into our lives. But neither philosophers nor scientists have been able to analyze and explain all of the meaning of time. Not only have they failed to provide easy explanations, but their efforts sometimes seem to have made mystery more mysterious and to have shown us that our lack of understanding was even greater than we supposed. Some philosophers argue that the passage of time is an important metaphysical fact, but one that can only be grasped by non-rational intuition. Others tell us that the flow of time is an illusion and that the future can no more be changed than the past. Some believe that future events come into existence as the present; the future becomes the actual moment-in-being. When spending money, one presumably tries to balance their expenditures in such a way as to obtain the best possible yield. This means that one will probably refrain from spending all of their assets on a single commodity. Instead, one will distribute their expenditure over a variety of different goods and services. The optimum situation will have been reached when it is impossible to increase satisfaction by reducing expenditure in one field and making a corresponding increase in another. A more technical description of this condition of equilibrium would be to say that the marginal utility of one dollar must be the same in all different sectors of expenditures. In the same manner, one tries to economize with their time resources. They must be so distributed as to give an equal yield in all sects of use. Otherwise, it would pay to transfer time from an activity with a low yield to one with a high yield and to continue to do this until equilibrium has been achieved. But in reality, neither concentrating all of ones time and efforts to one activity alone, nor spreading ones time equally across activities of unequal importance are good methods of managing time. Time is a scarce resource, although in a rather special way. The amount of iron-ore in the world is fixed. When it has all been converted into iron and steel, we must then rely on recycling or find other metals as an alternative. Time is inexhaustible, and there are three time related constraints that prohibit us as humans from doing everything we want. We do not live forever, know not how much time we have left, and cannot use the same sect of time to carry out multiple activities. With the assistance of technology and the somewhat modern philosophy of multi-tasking, we are able to accomplish more than ever. Nonetheless, no one can be in two places at once. I feel like I waste so much of my time doing things that are not really important to me, while my life is slipping away, or, I have so much to do; theres just not enough time for me to do it all, and even, Im harassed, overworked, tired, and tense. It would be pretty much the worst to end up running into the building feeling frazzled and out of breath. Getting lost and being late are disorienting and will distract you from doing a good job. To prevent this from happening, you should plan how and when to get to your interview beforehand. Map out the route and get a sense of traffic conditions or train schedule on that day. Then write down a schedule for that morning - when you need to wake up, meal prep, getting dressed - or whatever else you cando to take control of timing. A good rule of thumb is to plan to arrive near the building 25% of your total time early. If the commute takes two hours, try to be there 30 minutes early. If it takes 30 minutes, then give yourself seven to ten minutes of extra leeway. Then you can hang out and enter the building about five minutes before your interview. This outfit might err on the side of too dressy. #3: Print Your Materials Besides your fabulous self in your corporate classic outfit, what do you need to bring to the interview? Unless instructed otherwise, it’s a good idea to bring a few copies of your resume. You might print out five or so, especially if you’re interviewing with more thanone person. In addition to the interview, you could bring a list of references with contact information or perhaps recommendation letters themselves. You might also have supplemental materials, likea portfolio of work, your sales record, or even a two-month plan you drew up to show the hiring manager what steps you’d take in the new position. Print everything out a day or two beforehand; printers have a habit of breaking at the worst possible time. Gather everything in a folder or binder so that it’s organized and accessible. You can also use what you learned to inform any questions you have for yourinterviewer. Overall, your goal in the interview is to show that you’re qualified and that you have a clear understanding of the job. Finally, doing some research on your interviewer is also one other way to help you feel prepared. You can gain a sense of her professional and educational background. This knowledge can help you feel less nervous than you might walking into an interview with a completely anonymous person. #6: Prepare for Questioning The main part of your interview preparation should be thinking about your responses to common interview questions. Just about any interviewer will have questions on hand to explore your background and qualifications. Your interviewer will likely also ask follow-up questions aimed todig even deeper intowhat you have to say. Some common questions include, "Tell me about yourself," "Why do you want this job?" and "What would you contribute in this role?" The hiring manager might also ask you to share specific experiences of times that you achieved something, failed, managed conflict, or demonstrated leadership. I Am Smart and Jewish (Is that Redundant?) Â   As my application shows, I am an above average student in most areas. I have particularly excelled in mathematics, earning good grades throughout high school. When pondering about my future, I thought that I might be able to use math to be successful in business. So after my sophomore year, I decided to take some business courses with the goal of attaining a solid background in the field. High school, however, has not adequately prepared me to enter the world of business. This is the primary reason I am applying to the University of Connecticut: I hope to further expand my education in the field of business. Â   Outside of school, I have a wide variety of other interests. One of my favorite things to do is to play sports, especially baseball and basketball. Since I was about seven years old, I have played in many baseball and basketball leagues. While I join an intramural baseball league every spring, I play competitive basketball year-round. I play these sports not just to enjoy myself, but also to learn how to be a better leader. My leadership in basketball was formally acknowledged last year, as I received the sportsmanship award. This award meant a lot to me, especially since my team won the league championship that year. Not only did it show that everyone on the team recognized me for my leadership, but also it made me feel good knowing that I had helped lead a team to a championship trophy. This was my third year being on a championship basketball team, and I have also been on championship baseball teams, but winning the sportsmanship award was an added bonus. Â   Beyond my competitive sports, I have been skiing and playing golf recreationally since I was about eight years old. Every summer I take golf lessons to improve my abilities on the golf course. I also took ski lessons every winter for about five years until I felt I was skilled enough to compete on my own. During my sophomore year in high school, I went out for the high school ski team. Home school and public school is a debated subject. Parents are disputing whether home school education or a public school education is more beneficial for their child. An education that fits the needs of a child is important; that’s why there are things to be considered when choosing an educational path for a child. Certainly in a public school setting a parent should take note that their children is in a better learning environment to have and gain social diversity. Whereas in a homeschool setting they won’t have that face-to face interaction with other children of different cultures and races. Exposing a child to diversity at an early age helps to shape them into more accepting people, and they would be less likely to shy away from new things. Exposure to different cultures and religions is different in a home school setting. The child doesn’t get to shake the other persons hand or speak to them to know that they sound a little different and things like that spark their curiosity to ask questions and find out more about the differences and why. The only socialization the child receives is that pertaining to extracurricular activities after their home school cessation such as karate or soccer. Getting a grip on social diversity at an early age can help a child to create new ideas and change that can be beneficial to society and the world. Assuredly another thing to consider is the horrible truth about negative peer pressure and how it is more present in public school than in home school. This is one of the main reasons parents decide that home school is better for their child and it’s understandable. However, peer pressure won’t just fade into the background. It’s talked about in the newspaper and as well as on television, how children succumb to the peer pressure and in the end takes their own life and sometimes the lives of others. Although parents choose to home school their child, it doesn’t make the threat go away or remove it. If a parent is deciding that a home school education is better for their child because of peer pressure then, they should also be aware that they are sheltering the child from the harsh reality of the world. It won’t benefit the child is he/she is sheltered from it and never explained what it is or what it even sounds like. That child will grow up and get out in the world and doesn’t understand why some people aren’t very nice or single them out of the crowd. A parent should take the time to understand for themselves what peer pressure is, what the cause is, and how to deal with it. The parents should also take the time to teach their child how to avoid it. Once a parent has enough knowledge on peer pressure, they can explain it to the child and give them a understanding so they are not left in the dark no matter what educational path is chosen. Although there are many pros and cons about home school and public school, one of the biggest benefits of home schooling is the student/ teacher ratio. The teacher has more time for each individual student, therefore meaning they have time for increasing their learning. Its easier to create a focused learning environment without distractions and interruptions. In public schools, there are at least 20 to 30 students to one teacher, therefore, those distractions and interruptions are present. This makes it difficult for the child to focus and gain the knowledge needed to have success in the world. Unquestionably within a home school setting, a child can receive a customized education. Some children struggle with math or reading. Some kids have giftedness in science or history. No matter what their struggle or giftedness may be, home schooling permits the child and the parent to customize the education to maximize learning, get past and strengthen and weaknesses, and provide focus for those things that the child has a special interest in. The way that homeschool is placed is beneficial to a child that has needs concerning an education. For example, a child that has trouble focusing because they feel bored. A curriculum centered on a favorite subject would help. In public school, the curriculum is set and there really is no changing that fact. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it could teach a child that sometimes you don’t always get a choice and that’s okay. In conclusion many parents want the best educational path for their child. Whether that be in a homeschool setting where they can choose the child’s curriculum or in a public school setting where the child will have more of a chance to be socially diverse. No matter which option of an education is chosen, the parent will realize that all things must be considered when deciding on a good and healthy education for their child.
